Breathing Education, Buteyko Breathing
How we breathe effects everything we do in our lives and all the cellular functions in our body. We breathe approximately 20,000 times a day. Breathing well is the most important thing we can do to maintain perfect harmony in the body. In this day when life is fast paced and often busy there is a huge tendency for people to ‘over breath’ and develop unhealthy breathing patterns. At the integrated osteopathic clinic our osteopaths integrate Buteyko breathing methods to help a wide variety of conditions.

What is Buteyko Breathing?
The Buteyko Breathing Method is a therapeutic technique developed by Dr Konstantin Buteyko in the 1950s. It focuses on retraining the breath to be slower, gentler, and through the nose. The method emphasises reducing over-breathing (hyperventilation) and encourages a more controlled breathing pattern, which helps restore a natural balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body.
Core Principles: The method teaches individuals to breathe slowly and gently through the nose, maintaining a slight air hunger, which balances carbon dioxide levels in the blood.
Typical Exercises: Exercises include controlled pauses after exhalation, awareness of breathing patterns, and gradual reduction of breath volume.
Health Benefits: Buteyko breathing is used to manage conditions such as asthma, anxiety, sleep apnoea, and general respiratory discomfort. It may also help reduce symptoms associated with chronic stress.
How Buteyko Breathing Works
The technique is based on the idea that hyperventilation leads to low carbon dioxide levels, which can constrict blood vessels and reduce oxygen delivery to tissues. By consciously reducing the volume and rate of breathing, Buteyko practitioners aim to increase CO2 in the blood, relax the airways, and improve overall oxygenation. This process is achieved through daily practice and mindful attention to breathing habits.
We use specific Buteyko breathing methods and exercises to support many of out patients with a variety of conditions including chronic congestion, ear infections, mouth breathing habits, anxiety, stress, ADHD, headaches, postural tension and more.

The Connection Between TMJ, Breathing, and Sleep
Buteyko breathing is used to help manage a range of health conditions, particularly those involving the respiratory system. By promoting nasal breathing and reducing the tendency to over-breathe, this method helps in the management of:
Buteyko Breathing and Osteopathy
When combining Osteopathy with the Buteyko Breathing Method, patients can experience enhanced results.
The Buteyko Breathing Method offers a practical, non-invasive way to improve breathing efficiency and overall health. When integrated with osteopathic care, it supports a whole-body approach to wellness, addressing both the mechanics and the function of the respiratory system, and enhancing the body’s natural ability to heal and maintain balance.
