OVERCOME PAIn

Migraines and Headaches

Osteopaths have extensive training to manage headaches and migraine and differentiate between headaches with common causes and those with more serious pathology. Our osteopaths have the knowledge to assess headaches and migraine sufferers and will refer for testing if further investigations are needed.

Headaches are one of the most common health related conditions in Australia.

There are many types of headaches but the most common type usually originates from muscle tension, stiffness and spasms, or joint strain in the neck vertebrae or upper back vertebral region. Some of the causes of headaches include:

  • Sinus congestion
  • Stress
  • Whiplash injury
  • Jaw tension
  • Teeth grinding
  • Eye strain
  • Food intolerances and sensitivities
  • Chemical sensitivities
  • Infection
  • Poor posture

The osteopaths at the Integrated Osteopathic Centre work with a variety of techniques to help manage migraines and headaches. We have a whole body approach and will work to enhance general mobility, reduce muscular tension, nerve compression and inflammation. Some of the techniques including cranial osteopathy, muscle energy, myofascial release, soft tissue, dry needling and other techniques aim to increase blood supply and drainage to and from the head and neck to prevent congestion and pressure. Our Osteopaths may also advise on posture, exercises, stretching, diet, and improving ergonomics at work or home workspace.

Migraine and Headache red flags

It is important to seek advice from a medical professional including an osteopath if a headache develops after head trauma or if the headache/migraine is getting worse. This also includes if your headache is associated with fever, nausea, vomiting, fever, dizziness, blurred vision, speech changes, numbness or tingling.

Facet joints

Facet joints in the spine can become strained, leading to discomfort and reduced mobility. Our targeted treatment focuses on restoring joint function through manual therapy and recommended exercises to strengthen and stabilise the spine, relieving pain and preventing future strain.

Ligamentous and capsular strains

Ligamentous and capsular strains occur when the connective tissues around joints are stretched or torn. Our approach includes gentle hands-on techniques to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation and tailored exercises to enhance joint stability and flexibility, which aides in a faster recovery.

Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica treatment targets the relief of pain caused by nerve impingement, often manifesting as pain radiating down the leg. Techniques include spinal adjustments to alleviate nerve pressure, soft tissue therapy to reduce muscular tension, and specific exercises to improve spinal health and prevent recurrence.
