nurturing mothers and babies

Osteopathic support for feeding challenges and oral restrictions

Our Paediatric Osteopathic care focuses on supporting both mother and baby through their feeding journey. At the Integrated Osteopathic Centre, we use gentle techniques to address physical discomfort of the baby which may support positioning at the breast and the overall breastfeeding experience. Even an uncomplicated birth can result in immense force and compression being placed on the babies body. This force can result in retained tension causing pain and discomfort for the baby which can in turn affect latch and irritability at the breast or bottle.
Osteopathic treatment can be very effective at treating not only the effects from birth trauma but also in down regulating the baby’s nervous system. Our paediatric Osteopaths work collaboratively with many lactation consultants, including our clinic lactation consultant who supports our pediatric osteopaths with complex breastfeeding cases, including low weight gain.

About Oral Restrictions

Tongue Tie

Tongue tie, medically known as ankyloglossia, is when a piece of tissue under the tongue called a frenulum restricts movement of the tongue. Everyone has a frenulum that attaches the tongue to the floor of the mouth. The difference with a tongue tie is that the frenulum is tightened, short or closer to the tip of the tongue than it should be, restricting the normal range of motion of the tongue. In some cases, it can also affect the upper lip, leading to what is called a lip tie. Tongue and lip ties can have a significant impact on breastfeeding in some clinical cases. Tongue ties may cause a shallow latch due to decreased tongue elevation. This can cause nipple pain and sometimes nipple damage, increasing the risk of mastitis due to poor and inefficient latch.

Although tongue-tie can cause clinical issues, not all tongue ties need a scissor or dental laser release. By working through the known areas that are affected with tongue ties, we can determine if manual therapy is enough or whether a referral for further assessment and treatment is required.

The Osteopath will assess the head and neck, posture, mouth tension, tongue coordination and strength, base of skull and jaw. Ideally, we advise having an Osteopathic treatment 1-2 days before any tongue or lip procedure and then 1-2 days after to assist supporting the tongue and the rest of body adapt to the release.
